Mothers Day
Well, happy mothers day guys. (Or should I be more politically correct, and say girls?) Yesterday was mothers day, and as usual, the day was so busy I don't know how anyone could possibly enjoy it. This hallmark holiday is possibly one of the most annoying times of the entire year. Why is it that I feel pressured to buy Mum something? And why did I give in to that pressure?
I bought my Mum a new vase, and some pretty flowers to put in it. Dad wasn't going to get Mum anything until peter prompted him. While Mum and I were at church in the morning, Dad and Peter were out shopping for a present for Mum. Talk about last minute. It was actually pretty funny, because Mum forgot her keys to the house, and was angry because she got locked out after church and had to wait for Peter and Dad to get back from the shops. LOL. Dad, in all his wisdom, decided to ease the situation by presenting Mum with a bunch of flowers... I don't think she was as impressed with that as Dad anticipated. LOL.
Church in the morning on Mothers Day is always run by the men of the congregation. This year, because I am on the worship planning team I was given the task of trying to put together a service for the morning. Tony helped me, and kindly offered to do the sermon for me. Most of the hymns were Tony's suggestions, which turned out a little different to how I would have hoped..... but in the end I think everyone enjoyed themselves. It was kind of difficult to organise everyone to do each little bit, but I guess that's something I'm going to have to get used to.
Another tradition in my church is that every mothers day, the ladies of the church are presented with a flower upon arrival. You might remember me pricing flowers earlier this month and writing about it on my blog. I went back to the place I had priced the flowers at on the morning of mothers day only to find that all the prices had almost doubled. What cheeky little... grrr... I ended up buying them there anyway, even though I probably should have refused, out of the principle of the thing.
The afternoon on mothers day was spent at Grandma and Grandpa's place, as is the usual custom. This year was a little different, because Grandpa had to be brought home from the nursing home so that we could all have a meal with him, and then be taken back "home" again fairly early, because he was tired. It's the first time I have seen him since he was placed in the nursing home, which I know is not the most ideal situation. His legs have gotten very skinny, and I don't know how much progress he is making towards recovering his ability to walk. It must be so lonely and disheartening for Grandma. I guess it was nice to be just like old times for a little while at least... when everyone leaves, I can't imagine how lonely it would be.
In the evening, Chris and I went to church. This month's theme is religions around the world. Yesterday's focus was religion in Central and South America. Jules had even organised guest speakers who were from Mexico and Ecuador.
Today, I have spent the day working on my essay for human factors, and have decided that I don't care enough about "the effects of checkout design on supermarket cashiers" to write a whole 4000 words on it. I really hope the rest of our group gets inspired to work on it a little too.
Tonight is a social night for 18 plus, and we are having Mexican food. how appropriate.

Balancing Act
Ooh, it's been ages since I last did a proper update, I will try and keep this one short and sweet.
The past week has been a blur. So much stuff is happening all at once, it's really overwhelming actually. Uni wise, I have been very busy working on the assignments that are due shortly. Between the assignments there is a little bit of study before certain tests. It's all happening! It feels like you never get time to relax! I would love to take a night off.
I guess the balancing act is made even harder by the fact that I feel I am over-committed to several community groups. Lets take last week as an example; every night I had something on.
Monday is 18+ small groups for church, which I really enjoy.
Tuesday is Rovers, which I moderately enjoy. This week we had a guest speaker, a financial planner, who gave us some great tips for saving and building wealth. (I may as well give him a plug... he did give me a free book. lol. His website is www.moneyclip.com.au)
Wednesday night I went bowling with a team I foolishly joined at Swinburne. Well, I shouldn't say I foolishly joined it, but the amount of time it takes out of my day is a little tiresome.
Thursday night I had the honor of needing to be two places at once; church council held it's monthly meeting, and Kmart needed me to work. I tried to do both, but work won most of my time.
Friday night was nice and civilized, it was Chris's brother's birthday, so we made a special effort to have a family dinner. Everyone was there, which was so nice. I hope Tim enjoyed it as much as I did.
Saturday morning I worked on the ballooning photos in the Yarra Valley. Saturday night I was supposed to goto Lisa's birthday party, but in the end I felt too tired, and sent my apologies, as I crawled into bed at 9.30pm.
Sunday night was supposed to be church, but it was spent panicking about the gearbox assignment. Diana and I did loads of work, and got our assignment done, it looks great.
Wow, I just read through what I wrote above, I think I will stop wingeing! I get the feeling that there would be people out there that would love to have the social opportunities I have, and all I can do about it is complain? Why? Am I spoiled?
The world is given to me on a plate, and all I can do is complain about it.... Is this just western culture?

Three hour lectures should be banned!
Well, I just got out of a 3 hour lecture. I am lucky I got through it without falling asleep. I dont think its natural for anyone to be able to talk that long about project management. Ooh, and I should mention that the frequent use of the word 'project' is really getting to me. At this rate, our lecturer is sure to hit the target we calculated earlier in the semester. I cant remember exactly how many Diana and I calculated, but you can review it in an earlier post, if you really care that much about it... Lol.
Tonight at rovers, a guest speaker is coming along. They are going to educate us on how to properly budget. I am excited, but fear that he is going to tell me I cant buy Bruce new things any more. Come to think of it, Chris never buys new things for his car, is it true that new cars cost less?
New shoes for Bruce
Well, as if he hadn't cost me enough money already, today I bought new tyres for Bruce. Yay. Its my first experience of actually buying something on ebay. How exciting!
Heated debate
Monday nights I go to a church group called 18plus. We usually meet to talk about and explore our beliefs through a series of worksheets and studys.
Last night was talking about mission and how it can be applied on several levels. Whats the difference between jesus' mission and the church's? Why are there differences? These are difficult questions, and were the source of some debate.
It was an issue completely off topic that caused the most heated debate. Can you love someone if you cheat on them? Anthony thought its not possible. I think its possible. Hannah thought it was more complicated than that, that it is possible to be in love with multiple people at once, just at different levels of relationship. This caused alot of debate, what do you think, can you love your partner and cheat on them? Leave comments on this post explaining how or why.

Happy birthday
Birthday wishes in out to Mauris, who turned 20 on Saturday. To celebrate, we went to the comedy festival, and saw a show called 'lies, nonsense, and celebrity chefs'. The performers seemed to be funny people, and quite talented musicians, but somehow their talents did not combine to make funny songs. Its weird how that happens.
After the show, Mauris, Diana, Scott, Linda, Chris, and myself went to dinner. We chose a greek restaurant from the entertainment book, and proceeded to find the place. It turns out that it was in china town! I thought that was a little odd, but I guess it doesn't really matter.
Chris and Scott elected to have the banquet, which was sort of like a yum cha, but with greek food. All the food was beautiful, and I think Mauris enjoyed himself. It was really nice to be able to enjoy a night out with friends and not talk about uni work.
Chris and Scott got on like a house on fire! It was great. Apparently they are going to start their own radio show on joy fm. Lol. I can just imagine that, "breakfast with Chris and Scott". It would be really entertaining.
The other exciting thing that happened over the weekend happened on Sunday night. Because it was the 5th Sunday of the month, the youth service was held at Ferntree Gully, instead of Glen Waverly UC. Heather and I organised the service, and it all seemed to in really well. I sang out the front, which is something new for me. The next worship service I am helping organise is on mothers day. Tony is also helping me organise it.
I returned to uni today, using the time to help compile the project proposal which is due in tomorrow. I also spent some time searching the library archives for journal articles. Once I managed to find one that was about supermarket cashiers, I had to figure out the photocopier system, which proved a challenge. I managed to photocopy one article in the end, and the others I could download onto my phone. Ooh, the wonders of technology!
